Mumbai: After the BMC budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 was presented on Tuesday, the civic body is expected to publish its Climate Budget Report for the year by next month. This will be BMC’s second Climate Budget Report. The first one was published in June 2024 for FY 2024-25 with the provision of Rs 10,224 crores. “For FY 25-26, the Environment Department is expected to present the Climate Budget estimated at around Rs 12,000 crore,” a senior civic officer said.
“The Climate budget is part of the total BMC budget. However, it gives a clear picture of how much funds will be utilized by the central departments towards environment-friendly activities, aligning with the Mumbai Climate Action Plan,” the officer added.
“We are in the process of gathering information from central departments on environment projects in process and initiatives taken towards implementing the Climate Action Plan. The data collection is expected to be completed by next month after which the Climate Budget Report for FY 25-26 will be released,” an officer from the BMC Environment department told FPJ.
Notably, in the BMC budget for FY 25-26, Rs 113 crore is proposed for the Environment Department.
The Free Press Journal had reported on January 13 that to enhance the green lens for every work undertaken in the city, the number of agencies coordinating for Climate Action Plan for Mumbai will now include a total of 29 agencies.
The new agencies that will coordinate with BMC’s environmental department to implement Climate Action Plan include Fire Brigade, MMRDA, Deonar Abattoir, Health infrastructure cell, School infrastructure cell, Bombay Port Trust and BEST among others.
Out of the total funds provided for FY 24-25, 70 percent have been utilised. Of the total funds, maximum funds were allotted for Urban Flooding and Water Resource Management, followed by Sustainable Waste Management and Energy Renewal.
