Bhayandar: The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has initiated several road construction work, laying of water pipelines amongst other developmental projects in the twin-city. However, the private agencies who have bagged the contracts, ignored safety measures as motorists and pedestrians, especially senior citizens and children, pass dangerously within close range of the sites with heavy machinery and intense construction activity.
In blatant disregard to safety norms, trenches dug on both sides of the road remain uncovered, even as chambers are left open at many places with mounds of debris scattered on the narrow pathways. Most of the sites are devoid of blinkers, tin sheet barricades or even warning boards to alert motorists and pedestrians of the danger.
At some places the streetlights are not functional, consequently intensifying the level of risks. Apart from thrust on safety measures, former civic chief Dr Naresh Gite had cracked the whip by directing all concerned departments to ensure that contractors set up display boards which should ideally carry information in context to the name of the contractual agency, contact details along with specifications, name of the ongoing project, cost and most importantly the start and completion date of the work. However, since his abrupt transfer, the civic administration has brazenly turned a blind eye towards the illegalities.
