Mumbai: Your Amul milk will cost you two rupees more from Tuesday. This hike is across major markets of Maharashtra, Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttarakhand and other states. The dairy major said on Monday that it is increasing milk prices due to an increase in production cost.
Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells milk and milk products under the Amul brand, said milk prices were last revised two years back in March 2017. The increase will be seen across six brands. A home-maker Anita Singh, said, “We buy two litres of milk daily. A hike of Rs 2 per litre can impact my budget.
Milk rate has been the only constant for us, even as the rates of various food items keep changing.” “This increase in milk prices by Rs 2 per litre has happened after a gap of two years with an aim to provide remunerative milk purchase price to our milk producers owing to drop in milk production and increase in cost of production,” GCMMF said. Most of these milk producers are small and marginal farmers.
Considering the increase in the cost of milk production, all member milk unions of Gujarat have increased milk purchase price by a minimum of Rs 30-50 per kg fat (5-8 per cent) over the last few months, it said. Sana Shah, a resident in Andheri, said, “If this hike benefits our farmers, I have no issue paying this extra money. It is about helping our distressed food providers.”
