Bhayandar  : Around 12 buildings in the twin-city out of the 18 declared dilapidated and considered very dangerous by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corpora-tion (MBMC) continue to be inhabited. As an annual pre-monsoon ritual, the MBMC has tagged 18 buildings in the twin-city as dangerous and unfit for human habitation.

Thanks to an elaborate structu-ral audit exercise launched by the Public Works Department in 2013, this year’s figure has been significantly reduced as compared to yesteryear’s number of dilapidated structures. While six buildings have been evacuated, owners of two structures have moved the judiciary, thus creating legal obstacles for the civic administration in taking any type of coercive steps.

Apart from this a couple of buildings have managed to evade action due to political interference, sources said. While notices under relevant sections of the BPMC Act have already been issued, the concerned ward-in-charge has been directed to ensure that all rickety buildings are evacuated as soon as possible, said an official.

“Till now we have provided transit accommodation to around 327 displaced families at the Rental Housing Scheme Project in Kashimira which also includes beneficiaries under the BSUP housing project,” said executive PWD engineer Deepak Khambit.

Most of the old and dilapidated structures are on small plots which have already consumed a FSI of more than four, thus making redevelopment options difficult and unviable under the existing permission norms.
