Ujjain: Students gain insights on Kuchipudi dance

Ujjain: Spicmacay Ujjain has invited Kuchipudi exponent T Reddi Lakshmi for weeklong workshop demonstration in the government schools of the city. On the third day, she performed at 11 am in Government Girls Middle School Dussehra Maidan-2 and at 12.30 pm in Government Middle School Nanakheda on Wednesday.

She introduced the children to performance on different numbers on Lord Ganesha – who is the remover of obstacles and who is worshipped by all the sages and bestow knowledge to those who pray. Her presentation was choreographed by Padma Shri Jayarama Rao who has dedicated his entire life for the promotion of Kuchipudi dance in North India.

Children also witnessed a performance on Lord Shiva’s dance – a composition of Yathi Narayan Thirtha. In this number the devotee praises Lord Shiva and explains his attributes. It is set in Ragamalika and Talamalika. Children also availed the opportunity to learn the eye movements in Kuchipudi dance with rapt attention and enthusiasm. They learnt how practising eye movements also helps keep their eyes healthy.

Children also posed different questions to the exponent, to which the expert responded with equal enthusiasm. In Dussehra Maidan School artist was welcomed by Sunita Solanki and vote of thanks was proposed by Madhubala Gupta. In Nanakheda School students Payal Prajapat, Somaya Katiyar and Mayuri Gujarati presented bouquet to guests. Vote of thanks was given by Kausalya Patidar.

On Thursday, T Reedy will perform in Government Higher Secondary School Fazalpura at 12:15 pm and in Government Middle School Pandariba at 2 pm. SPIC MACAY convener Pankaj Agrawal said the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) is a voluntary youth movement which promotes intangible aspects of Indian cultural heritage by promoting Indian classical music, classical dance, folk music, yoga, meditation, crafts and other aspects of Indian culture; it is a movement with chapters in over 300 towns all over the world. SPICMACAY workshop demonstration is for sure helping the children all over India, he added.
