Mumbai: Do not sit back and complain or criticise. Instead, know your leaders and vote. That is the message given to the Christian voters by its community leaders. Members of the community, especially the youth, are being encouraged to consider voting as a responsibility and are being urged to go out and vote for the Lok Sabha elections.
Citizens should collaborate with the government and help solve local civic issues, claimed Christian priests. Fr Anthony Fernandes, the parish priest of St Teresa’s Church, said, “We always face basic issues like broken roads, pothole-ridden roads or lack of water supply in our residential areas. Instead of complaining about these issues, we should take an effort to understand the civic system and approach the concerned authorities for help.
Knowing our local leaders will help us to vote for efficient leaders irrespective of the political party they belong to.” The youth can be observant and vigilant about elections and electoral candidates, claimed members of the Christian community.

Sancia Pereira, a community leader, said, “We have got to closely observe our leaders and the work done for the community at large. This will help us know our areas better instead of complaining later about local issues. Youngsters have the power of social media and they can use these digital platforms to spread the message of importance of voting among their friends.”
Church leaders have told the members, voting blindly will jeopardise the society. A senior leader of the community at Orlem, said, “Voting for the sake of it or without thorough knowledge will harm the society. Every vote counts and we got to see the work done by the candidates instead of favouring any one political party. Elections directly affect our lives and we should not be casual about it.”
