Mumbai: In a crackdown on illegal cash brought to the city, the Election Commission (EC) officials on Sunday seized over Rs 11 lakh in two separate cases. The EC’s flying squad seized Rs 3.40 lakh from Sion fish market and Rs 7.84 lakh from Charni Road. While police have registered a case, the Income Tax officials will investigate further to ascertain the source of the seized cash.
According to police, the flying squad of EC received a tip-off about two men travelling with cash near Sion fish market, which might be used for illegal purposes. Upon interception, police seized Rs 7.84 lakh in denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000. When the EC officials asked the duo about the source of the cash, they were unable to give a satisfactory answer.

The two men were detained and the cash was seized. In a similar incident, the EC flying squad had intercepted a car near the Gol Deool at VP Road in Charni Road and found Rs 3.40 lakh in cash. In both cases, the Income Tax department has started an investigation to ascertain the source of the cash.
