Though Margot Robbie has only had her Hollywood breakthrough in 2013 with her standout supporting turn in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, she’s swiftly established herself as a serious A-lister actress. A charismatic person with exceptional acting talents, she has proven herself as a performer to watch by the many colourful characters brought to life by her.

In the eight years since, she has earned two Academy Award nominations, five BAFTA wins and a big fanbase around the globe. On occasion of her birthday on July 2nd, we will be taking a look at some of her best performances over the years.

1. I, Tonya (2017) - Tonya Harding

I, Tonya is an American biopic sports black comedy film directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Steven Rogers, with Margot Robbie as the acting lead. Margot’s first Oscar-nominated role remains her best performance. Starring as the controversial 1990’s figure skating icon, Tonya Harding, Margot effortlessly embodied this infamous icon with her acting abilities. She played all the ages of the character with a wonderful charm, exploring the emotional depth and ferocious nature of the figure skater.

2. Suicide Squad (2016) - Harley Quinn

In the action thriller "Suicide Squad," intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) releases Gotham's most dangerous villains from jail under the caveat that they complete a deadly mission that could be their last. One of them is Harley Quinn, Joker's ex-beau and rising super-villainess.

In both Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, Robbie is simply so in tune with the antiheroine’s absurdity throughout every single scene that it becomes almost impossible to separate the two. She has explored any characteristics of the character and played an enigmatic role.

3. Mary, Queen of Scots (2018) - Queen Elizabeth I

Mary Queen of Scots is a 2018 historical drama film directed by Josie Rourke The film stars Saoirse Ronan as Mary, Queen of Scots, and Margot Robbie as her cousin Queen Elizabeth I.

For her performance, Robbie earned nominations for a SAG Award and BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her way as a period actress with brilliant skill.

4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) - Sharon Tate

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a 2019 comedy-drama film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Most of the movie focuses on fading star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), with Sharon Tate’s (Margot Robbie) story line as a young actress with a famous director husband representing the other side of the coin: She’s a performer who is on the rise, with a seemingly bright future.

Margot Robbie is excellent, and she has at least one amazing scene that might be the movie’s high point. About the role, “I did feel like I got a lot of time to explore the character without dialogue,” the actress said. “Rarely do I get an opportunity to spend so much time on my own as a character.”

5. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - Naomi Lapaglia

The Wolf of Wall Street is a 2013 American epic biographical black comedy crime film directed by Martin Scorsese. Margot Robbie plays the role of Jordon Belfort’s wife (the main character played by Leonardo DiCaprio) Naomi Lapaglia. This movie was Margot’s breakthrough role in Hollywood and her popularity grew immensely because of it.

6. Focus (2015) - Jess Barrett

Focus is a 2015 American crime comedy-drama film written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Sequa, starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. The plot follows a career con artist who takes an aspiring femme fatale under his wing. For Robbie, “Focus” cemented her status as a major star. She did a remarkable job, showing her great instincts and flair for comic timing, asserting herself as a powerful cinematic presence.

Hilary B Gayle

Bombshell is a 2019 American drama film directed by Jay Roach and written by Charles Randolph. In her second Oscar-nominated role, Margot Robbie plays the new girl at Fox News, thrilled to have landed the job, but increasingly aware of the nefarious environment. Once again delivering a wonderful performance, she brings the character alive with a heartbreaking touch.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is a 2016 American biographical war comedy-drama film, directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. While Robbie plays eccentric characters effortlessly, this movies shows that she plays an equally great normal person. As a journalist who befriends Tina Fey in this dramedy set during Operation Enduring Freedom, Robbie amazingly plays the flirty, beautiful, talented reporter Fey aspires to be. She proves comedy is in her wheelhouse.
