Wellington: New Zealand star batsman Kane Williamson has been officially announced as the national captain in all three formats of the game.

The 25-year-old prolific batsman, who is currently leading his side in one-day international and Twenty20 outfits, succeeds Brendon McCullum, who retired in February following the Test series against Australia.

Williamson also proved his skills as a leader in the recently-concluded World Twenty20 in India, where he led his side to the semi-finals.

Reflecting on his newest appointment, Williamson admitted that he had learned a lot from his predecessor, insisting that he was determined to continue McCullum’s legacy, Stuff.co.nz reported.

Crediting McCullum and head coach Mike Hesson for the team’s success in recent times, Williamson expressed that having good players and people alongside him would certainly make his job easier.

In addition to being the 34th player to skipper the New Zealand team in full internationals, he will become the country’s 29th Test skipper when he will lead his side to Africa in July-August, with two games in both Zimbabwe and South Africa.
