New Delhi : The Shiv Sena lawmakers on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and made out a strong case against the Jaitapur nuclear power plant, demanding that the 9900 MW project be scrapped summarily.
The team of Sena MPs met Modi late Wednesday afternoon. The appointment came through only after senior Shiv Sena members pleaded with the PMO that they must meet the PM before Parliament gets adjourned sine die. Though an NDA partner, the Shiv Sena had been seeking an appointment with the PM for at least two weeks.
Sena MP Arvind Sawant told reporters soon after the meeting that they furnished details of reports conducted by geological experts, oceanography experts and case studies of other projects worldwide to show that the project would not only be hazardous for the ecology of the Ratnagiri belt but also wreak havoc on the Indian Ocean.
”There are field reports warning us that the project could lead to tsunami and earthquakes. That radiation and emissions from nuclear power plants adversely affects the life of pregnant women has been proven beyond doubt in several projects, Sawant argued. It is unfortunate that while the major world powers are cutting down on nuclear power, we are going in for a 10,000-odd MW plant, he added. Sources said the Prime Minister looked at the reports and charts submitted to him. He told the Sena MPs he was not a scientist but he would send the material to experts who would examine it in details.
