Mumbai: While the city is itching for the monsoon to start, the Indian Meteorological Department has put out an alert in Maharashtra as heavy rain is expected in the next two days. The weather forecast says that June 19 and June 20 are likely to witness heavy rain in isolated places.
A senior official in the IMD said, “The city will be hit by heavy rain in the next two days and Mumbaikars are advised to be careful while stepping outdoors at weekend.”
Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai’s standing committee has said that the city may face water scarcity after July 31 as the water stock stands diminished owing to last year’s 14% deficit. This is one the reason why the MCGM has enforced a 20 per cent water cut this year. The standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse said that they might take 50% of water from the state, if the city needs it.
Currently, the lakes have 1,12,432 Million Liters Daily (MLD) for this year whereas last year the quantum was 1,89,600 MLD. However, lakes like Modak Sagar, Tansa and Vehar have 39186 MLD whereas Tulsi, Bhatsa and Vaitarna have 73245 MLD.
