Mumbai : A non-congnizable offence has been registered against a prominent city industrialist at MRA Marg (Crawford Market) police station for allegedly thrashing and abusing

his driver who had been working for him since 2013.  Under Section 155(2) of the CrPC, no police officer can investigate a non-cognizable offence unless ordered by the magistrate to do so.

On Wednesday evening, the industrialist, hard pressed for time, reportedly asked his driver (name withheld) to make it from Parel to Fort within 10 minutes in his Innova car. The driver, however, failed in the assigned task even though he reportedly jumped a couple of signals. The arterial road leading to Fort was clogged with traffic in the evening rush hour. The distance between the two points is roughly 24 km.

His crime: he failed to reach Fort from Parel in 10 minutes

The industrialist was livid and on reaching D N Road reportedly started abusing the driver. Later, he asked him to stop the car, got out and beat him up.

Despite several attempts, neither the industrialist nor his office offered a comment on the incident which was confirmed by the Sr. PI of the police station, Sukhlal Varpe.

The driver has also reportedly alleged that the industrialist always forced him to jump traffic signals.
