Cambridge stun St. Francis D’Assisi to storm into final

Mumbai : Strong favourites St. Francis D’Assisi (Borivali), playing on their home ground, were stunned by Cambridge  (Kandivali), who beat them by a solitary goal to storm into the boys under-14 final of the  Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament (for Suburban schools) of Maharashtra government’s DSO (Divisional Sports Office), organized and sponsored by Vision Sports Reconnect and Fairplay Sports Management at St Francis D’Assisi high school ground (Borivali) ground here on Wednesday. The all-important goal came mid-way in the first half in a skirmish inside the box before Abhinav Michael slipped the ball in.

Cambridge take on Bandra’s St. Stanislaus, another strong contender for the title. The Bandra boys proved their mettle as they outplayed Juhu’s Jamnabai Narsee 3-0 in the other semifinals.

The girls under-17 semifinals, too, witnessed  surprise results with  RSB Arya Vidyamandir (Juhu) beating Dhirubhai Ambani   2-1, after trailing 0-1 at the breather. Both the second half goals came through Kritika Chhabra and Reva Sanke. A brace by Vidisha Sawant  saw MMK Junior College (Bandra) getting the better of Apostolic Carmel (Bandra) 2-0. Both the finals will be played on Friday, August 5.

BOYS U-14 : (Semifinals): Cambridge (Kandivali) 1 (Abhinav  Michael) bt St Francis D’Assissi (Borivali) 0; St. Stanislaus (Bandra) 3 (Shane Kenny, Joshua D’Souza, Zubair Karbari) bt Jamnabai Narsee (Juhu) 1 (Udipit Bakshi).
