Indore : Adding a shocker to the dog menace in the city, a census of the stray dogs was carried out by the IMC from Sept. 2 to Sept. 6 revealed that the city has over 29,000 stray dogs.
It was informed that the zonal inspector of a particular area were asked to give a tentative data of the dogs in a particular area at a meeting of the IMC health department and on the basis of which, a tentative data bank of stray dogs was developed. There is no bifurcation on the number of female dogs, male dogs and the new born.
Sources said that now as the data is out, the IMC officials may seek help from the NGO involved in carrying sterilisation operations of the stray dogs in the city and may be asked to operate a larger number of stray dogs in the city.
IMC carried out the census to know the exact number of the stray dogs to be operated in a day to make sure that the NGO operates a certain number of dogs everyday.
In the meeting held a day before, it was said that the given target of number of dogs to be operated may increase after the number of dogs has been ascertained.
Earlier it was said that if the NGO doesn’t operate at least 25 dogs a day then the IMC could impose a fine on it. But now as the bigger digit is out in open, its working may become easier.
“The census was carried out by the IMC from Sept 2 to Sept 6 and finally the digit is out. Now, the further actions would be taken as per the directions of the IMC Commissioner,” said Dr Uttam Yadav, In-charge of the Kamla Nehru Prani Sanghralaya.
