Indore (Madhya Pradesh): No country can win a war without systematic control of its electromagnetic spectrum.

This statement underscores the critical importance of electromagnetic spectrum management in modern warfare.

Dr D C Pandey, Former Scientist, DRDO, made this pointed observation in his keynote address at the 6-day AICTE-ATAL Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) at Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS), Indore.

The program brought together renowned experts from defense and academia to share their insights and experiences in this critical field. Dr. Pandey's address highlighted the significance of EMI/EMC techniques in strategic defense systems and civilian applications, such as electric vehicles. He emphasised the need for systematic control of the electromagnetic spectrum to ensure effective communication and defense systems.

The program featured a technical session by Professor Saptarshi Ghosh, IIT Indore, on Frequency Selective Surface (FSS), a cutting-edge technology with potential applications in:

Missile Stealth Technology: FSS-based structures can be used to evade enemy radar

Medical Applications: EMI protection during MRI procedures can be achieved using FSS-based structures

SGSITS Indore has established modern laboratory facilities for EMI/EMC research, including:

Anechoic Chamber Simulation Laboratory

Signal Integrity and EMI Shielding Testing Facility

PCB Design and EMC Testing Lab

Advanced Equipment: Field strength and noise emission measurement

These facilities support research activities and are empowering India towards technological self-reliance, said Professor Satish Kumar Jain, Head of the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering department.
