Indore : In an effort to reduce cost of door-to-door garbage collection, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) is planning to handover the contracts to the NGOs instead of private contractors.
IMC health in-charge Rajendra Rathore said a few NGOs were given charge to collect garbage from Vijaynagar, Sukhliya and Kabirkhedi. At present, these NGOs are collecting garbage free of charge and they collect both organic and inorganic waste. The collected organic waste is converted into manure and utilised for funding expenses of garbage collection.
The huge difference in garbage collection cost by the private contractors and the NGOs is attributed to use of fuel powered vehicles by the former. Under the door-to-door garbage collection, the private contractors were provided Tata Magic while the NGOs use only cycle rickshaws. Use of cycle rickshaw also helps environment and lowers the garbage collection cost.
So, the IMC has decided to allot all the contracts to the NGOs. However, one NGO will be able to collect garbage from only 5 wards of 25,000 houses. A cycle rickshaw collects garbage from 250 houses in a day. Therefore, more cycle rickshaws would be allotted to the NGOs.
The IMC is also planning to collect Rs 60 per month from a house and Rs 170 annually.
