Did MYH doctors’ negligence cause death of mental patient?

Indore : Death of a mental retarded patient at MY Hospital has sparked speculations about alleged medical negligence. The patient died after ripping off a urine catheter that was left behind at the time of his discharge.

The body has been sent for post-mortem to know the exact reason of the death. Deceased Madan Suresh was admitted to the Medicine Department of MY Hospital due to some urinary problem a few days ago. He also suffered from mental illness.

“Madan was discharged from the hospital on Thursday noon. The urine catheter was left attached to him. While being shifted from MY Hospital to Mental Hospital, he pulled out the catheter due to which he was injured and excessive bleeding started,” a hospital employee told Free Press on condition of anonymity.

He was again admitted to the surgery department of the hospital. “Patients health condition was started deteriorating in the evening after which the duty doctors immediately sent him for sonography and found that his urine bladder was busted,” the employee said adding doctors immediately performed a surgery, but he couldn’t be saved.

Allegations were afoot that the doctors did not act in haste to save his life. Mental Hospital administration sent the patients’ body for post-mortem and informed his family members residing in Mumbai. Madan was admitted to the Mental Hospital on the orders of CJM.

Superintendent of MY Hospital Dr AD Bhatnagar said that he is unaware of any case of negligence. “In case of any type of negligence, department employees inform me first. I don’t have any information regarding this case,” Dr Bhatnagar said.

Superintendent of Mental Hospital Dr Ramghulam Razdan said that Madan was getting treatment in Mental Hospital from a long time. “He as admitted to MY Hospital as he was anaemic and suffering from other diseases. We have sent his body for post-mortem to know about the exact reason of his death,” Dr Razdan added.
