Vat Savitri Vrat this year will be celebrated on June 3 by the women in Northern states while the women in western states like Maharashtra will celebrate it on June 16. What is also known as the Savitri Brata is celebrated on two occasions as Vat Savitri and Vat Purnima within a gap of a fortnight, depending on which region of the country it is.

The difference between Vat Savitri and Vat Purnima is that Vat Savitri is celebrated on Jyeshtha Amavasya that is No Moon Day or the New Moon Day, while Vat Purnima is celebrated on A Full Moon Day, that is Purnima.

Married woman consider it as one of the most important festival amongst Hindus where they fast for their husband's long life and well-being.

Vat Savitri 2019: The Muhurat

Women from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar will be observing the Vat Savitri fast on Monday. Amavasya Tithi starts at 16:39 on June 2, 2019 (Sunday), and ends at 15:31 on June 3, 2019 (Monday).

Vat Savitri 2019: Puja Items

For the puja thali one must have 5 fruits with Mango being a compulsion, soaked chana, puris made of jiggery, nag, akshat (rice), chandan (sandalwood), dhoop, agarbatti stick, sindoor, a fan made up of bamboo, lots of flowers and a kalash, naagin idol, Savitri and Satyavan idols all made up of clay. You will also need metres of preferably red thread and a red cloth.

Vat Savitri 2019: Puja Vidhi

Woman celebrating Vat Savitri are supposed to fast. To start the puja vidhi they must begin with taking holy bath and then getting dressed in traditional and colourful attires in order to look their best, along with accessorising with colourful bangles and beautiful jewelleries. Many woman also put on henna, that is mehendi and decorate their hair with flowers. Getting ready is an important part of the festival.

After this, one must carry the puja thali to a place with Vat or Banyan tree where they must worship the tree by applying vermillion, akshat, chandan followed by offering flowers and garland to the tree. Women then tie the colourful thread around the tree as they take three rounds of it and offer fruits, prasad and water to the tree. They then pray for God to shower their marital life with blessings and healthy, long lives for their husbands. Then, they sit and listen to kathas of Savitri and Satyavan. This puja can be done individually too. However, it is observed that most woman go in groups to give their offerings.
