New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday wondered why Prime Minister Modi is continuously changing the goalposts in this election, saying maybe nothing seems to have worked. “PM Modi has lost his political balance. His mannerism, his body language, his abuses in the speeches are indicative of which way the elections are going,” Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said. He said the diatribe and reprehensible abuses spewed in Modi’s speeches is not only lowering the dignity of the PM’s office but also hurting India’s image at large. “The vile, contemptible, repugnant and nauseating noise that PM Modi is making in his speeches is only exposing him day after day,” he said.

“You were given a historical opportunity by the people of this country. However, you will go down in history as a mere stuntman rather than a statesman,” he said. Singhvi listed how Modi has been changing the goalposts, starting with the misuse of the valour and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces, trying to hide behind the jawans’ bravery instead of answering on the intelligence failures first in Pulwama and then in Gadchiroli. “They propped our brave jawans in BJP advertisements and insulted them by making them political pamphlets for a vote garnering exercise.”

Modi’s second goalpost was to question the opposition unity with the “mahamilavati” (massive adulteration) jibe, Singhvi said and asked him to better reserve that phrase for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) that has grown from 30 allies in 2014 to a 42-member alliance in 2019. The third shift in the goalpost is to insult the memory of assassinated former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, Singhvi said, asserting that he was one of the national icons who built this modern nation and the Congress respects each one of them as its pillars of strength be they Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose, B R Ambedkar, Maulana Azad, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi and many more.
