Chennai: Even as the case of serial sexual abuse and blackmail of young women in Pollachi has turned into an election issue in Tamil Nadu, the Chennai police on Thursday registered a criminal case against Sabareesan, the son-in-law of DMK president M K Stalin on charges of launching a smear campaign against Deputy Speaker and AIADMK MLA Pollachi V Jayaraman linking his kin with the crime.
Sabareesan is better known as Stalin”s unofficial political strategist. The opposition had earlier accused the ruling AIADMK of trying to cover up the crime as influential people were involved. The Government has since recommended transfer of the probe in the case to the CBI.
Earlier this week, the Deputy Speaker alleged that Stalin and Sabareesan were behind what he called a smear campaign to bring disrepute to him, his son and the AIADMK in an election year and complained to the DGP. However, he did not substantiate his charge.
On Thursday the Cyber Crime Unit registered a FIR in which they named Sabareesan as an accused. Sources said the police have invoked Sections 153 IPC (Wanton provocation with intent to cause riot), 469 IPC (forgery for purpose of harming reputation), 471 IPC (using as genuine forged document or electronic record) and 505 (1) (a) (b) (c) (spreading false information).
