New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee has rejected the mercy plea of Afzal Guru, who was convicted of plotting the 2001 terror attack on the Indian parliament.

“President has rejected his mercy plea. He (president) rejected it a few days ago,” Venu Rajamony, the president’s press secretary, told IANS.

The confirmation came amid widespread rumours in Kashmir that Afzal Guru had been hanged. An announcement from the government is expected shortly.
