New Delhi: The issue of a recent oil spill off the coast of Tamil Nadu that is posing a threat to environment and health of local residents has gone to the National Green Tribunal. The petition, which is likely to be heard by a bench headed by NGT chairperson Swatanter Kumar on Monday, has also sought constitution of an expert committee to oversee and monitor the entire cleanup process and assess the damage caused to the environment.
“The fish and all the other aquatic animals have become victims to the widespread disaster caused by the two vessels as a result of their negligence,” the plea filed by one Ashwini Kumar through advocate Sumeer Sodhi said.
The petition has made the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Ministry of Shipping, the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, the TN State Pollution Control Board as parties.–PTI
