Guwahati : The Centre said the proposed new Consumer Protection Bill will be introduced in the coming Winter Session of Parliament for its passage to replace the existing 30-year-old law. “We will introduce the new Bill in the next session of Parliament and it should be passed then. The Standing Committee had already passed it and submitted its recommendation,” Union Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said at a press conference here. The government would soon prepare a cabinet note regarding the Bill, he said. “This will be a completely new Act and will replace the existing Consumer Protection Act, 1986. After passage by the Parliament, the new legislation will be known as Consumer Protection Act 2016,” he said. Paswan said punitive action has been suggested against celebrities for misleading advertisements, adulteration of food items and setting up of a Consumer Protection Authority.
