New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday set free on bail father-in-law and mother-in-law of a woman burnt alive in Sukali village of Washim district in 2004, two years after her marriage.
The Bench of Justices R Banumathi and R Subhash Reddy suspended the rigorous imprisonment of nine years on the in-laws in view of the period of custody, their age and other facts and circumstances, letting the trial court impose appropriate conditions for their release.
The woman Sandhya was repeatedly harassed by her husband and the in-laws demanding dowry and she was found burnt to death in her parents’ house when nobody was there. The in-laws, Dutta Khadse (66) and Kaushalyabai Datta Khadse (61) had come in appeal after the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court dismissed their petition in July last year.
