Ahmedabad: In a shocking case of political intimidation and regional chauvinism, Gujarat BJP MLA Virendrasinh Jadeja from Rapar constituencyhas claimed he received threats from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers over the use of Gujarati language on the signboard of his office in Mumbai.

The incident has reignited the language politics debate in Maharashtra, with the Gujarati community expressing concern over growing hostility against linguistic diversity in the state.

According to sources, Jadeja has an office in Mumbai catering to a large Gujarati-speaking population. The board outside the office was written in Gujarati — something MNS workers reportedly found objectionable. Known for their aggressive stance on Marathi pride and the "Bhumiputra" narrative, MNS members allegedly threatened Jadeja, demanding the signboard be changed to Marathi or face “consequences.”

“Gujarati Community Has Every Right to Their Language”

Speaking on the incident, Virendrasinh Jadeja hit out strongly against the threats. “A large Gujarati population resides in Mumbai. We have every right to use our language. This is not just about a signboard — this is about cultural respect and constitutional rights,” Jadeja told reporters.

He added, “Issuing threats over a language is not only undemocratic but also dangerous to social harmony. We all must co-exist peacefully and respect every community.”

The incident has sparked outrage among BJP circles and prompted strong reactions from leaders across the political spectrum. Many view this as a direct challenge to the federal spirit of the Constitution.

Political Fallout and Investigation

Sources say the issue is being discussed at higher levels within BJP and may trigger political retaliation. Meanwhile, the Mumbai police have reportedly been informed of the threat. Security arrangements around Jadeja’s Mumbai office have been reviewed.
