Ahmedabad: A tragic accident in Ahmedabad's Khokhra claimed the lives of a 50-year-old man, Jitendra Bhavsar, and his three-year-old granddaughter on Tuesday after a drunk truck driver ran over their two-wheeler.

The incident occurred on a busy road when the truck hit the two-wheeler from behind, causing both victims to fall under the vehicle's wheels. Despite being rushed to the nearest hospital, they succumbed to their injuries due to the severity of the impact.

CCTV footage of the accident posted on X by Ahmedabad Mirror shows the exact moments when the truck driver, identified as Geetmasindh from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, recklessly driving in a crowded area. He failed to stop despite seeing the two-wheeler ahead and hit it from behind.

Ahmedabad Traffic DCP (East) Safin Hasan confirmed that Geetmasindh was drunk at the time of the incident and has been arrested. “The area where the accident took place is restricted for heavy vehicles in the afternoon. We are investigating how the truck was allowed access and if it was issued a permit,” Hasan added.

The accident occurred while Jitendra Bhavsar and his granddaughter were on their way to Bhagat Estate. The senseless loss of life has left the community in shock, with many questioning the enforcement of traffic rules and the rising number of accidents involving drunk driving.

An FIR has been lodged against the driver under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act, including Sections 177, 184, and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which pertain to rash and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
