Frustrated by drought, farmer in Ahmednagar ends life

Ahmednagar: A young farmer in Baburdi Bend, Ahmednagar, frustrated by drought, which laid waste to his harvest, consumed poison and died in the hospital on Saturday. Shashikant Sukhdev Chaubey, 35, used to go to his farm everyday, hopeful of a turnaround but four days ago he consumed poison on his farm. His family spotted him lying unconscious on the farm and rushed him to the nearest hospital for treatment. Doctors had kept him under observation and tried to save his life, but he died during treatment. Chaubey is survived by his parents, a wife, son, daughter and two sisters. Their father had borrowed a farm loan but has been unable to repay it. The family has been dealing with this burden for a year.
