Jaipur: The Congress has touched the much needed three figure by winning the Ramgarh countermanded Assembly election, the results of which was declared on Thursday. Now with victory of party candidate Safia Zubair Khan, the number of Congress MLAs has reached 100 in the House of 200. The victory of this seat became a prestigious issue for the minority government which was allowed to form the government in December last year as the single largest party.
CM Ashok Gehlot said that the victory of the Congress candidate Safia Khan proved that the people were really keen to dethrone the BJP government headed by Vasundhara Raje and now the people of the state would give their overwhelming mandate in the coming Lok Sabha elections. Gehlot said that the party which could not get a single seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha election would sweep the election for the Lower House because the people of the state is keen to bring down the Narendra Modi government
Congress contested the election with new strategies and the husband of the winner Safia Khan, a former Congress MLA, Zubair Khan managed to muster the votes of all the communities pushing the BJP nominee Sukhwant Singh to second and Jagat Singh, the son of former Union minister Natwar Singh, who posed serious challenge to both the Congress and the BJP, to the poor third slot
The complexion of the electoral battle changed just in one day when Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and the deputy Chief Minister and the PCC president Sachin Pilot actively campaigned three days before the poll day and addressed large number of meetings that helped the Congresss unite the Muslim votes.
