New Delhi : The Bhartiya Janata Party leaders are hailing Prime Minister Modi for his “master stroke” of demonetisation but they are privately worried over its fallout on the upcoming Assembly elections.
Their worry is that it has created a panic, particularly in the villages where the banking system is still not that good to enable the people quickly adjust life with the new currency.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram put his finger on the pulse, stressing that the timing of the decision was wrong, particularly when it came just ahead of the month long marriage season across the country from November 15. Over 5 million marriages are to take place in the country in the coming days, an estimated 40,000 in Delhi alone.
The BJP leaders say many marriages will have to be put off as the preparations have gone awry because of the high denomination notes becoming no longer valid instruments for the payments.
Most of the people in the rural areas prefer to stock up Rs 500 notes for use on various occasions, and they will be put to great inconvenience as they won’t be able to use them even for buying the daily use items, the leaders said.
