The President conferred the Padma Awards to 56 of the 112 personalities, chosen for this year’s honour, at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Actor-filmmaker Prabhu Deva was one of the Indian film industry members to receive the honor from President Ram Nath Kovind.
Receiving the award for the field of Art-Dance, he attended the event in a traditional south Indian avatar. The actor was seen wearing a red Kurta and a white dhoti.
Apart from Prabhu Deva, singer and music director Shankar Mahadevan and veteran actor Kader Khan (posthumous) received a Padma Shri award, while Malayalam actor Mohanlal was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan.
This year’s awardees comprised four Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri recipients.
The Padma awards, announced on the eve of Republic Day this year reflected a vast diversity with 21 women and 11 persons from the category of foreigners, (NRI, PIO, OCI ) and one transgender person. The government had received nearly 50,000 nominations for this year’s Padma awards.
