On July 13, 2009, veteran actor of Marathi and Hindi film industry, Nilu Phule passed away. Popularly known as ‘Motha Manus’ of Marathi film industry, Nilu Phule worked in around 250 films in his career.

He was most prominently seen playing the roles of notorious villains in the films. Phule was also a social worker and was associated with Rashtra Seva Dal. Did you know? Nilu Phule was born in 1930 in Pune as Nilkanth Krushnaji Phule to the clan of the great social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. At the age of 17, Nilu Phule got his first job as a gardener at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune where he used to get 80 Rs per month.

Nilu Phule began his career from theatre and did some memorable dramas like Katha Akalecha Kandyachi, Udyan and others. He also did many memorable Marathi and Hindi films like Saaransh, Hamaal De Dhamaal, Sinhasan, Prem Pratigyaa, Coolie and others.

He died due to esophageal cancer at 78. His wife Rajani Phule died in 2011. He is survived by his daughter Gargi Phule Thatte.
