HBO’s Chernobyl is a miniseries based on the nuclear disaster of 1986 that occurred in Soviet Ukraine, tracing its aftermath. The show revolves around the deaths that took place, the cover up on the part of Russia and how the magnitude of it remains unclear even today.
According to the latest report by IMDb, Chernobyl beats Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, becoming the only show with a 9.6 rating. The first episode begins with the recording of a confession made by Valery Alekseyevich Legasov, one of the protagonists who commits suicide. The series begins with the explosion which is tried to counter, but turns into several failed attempts as authorities fail to realise its magnitude.
The show is highly relevant with a gripping story line that shows corruption in the system that typically neglects the well-being of those working on the lower level. With scenes that will move you to the edge and even cringe (visuals of those affected by the radiation), Chernobyl manages to keep the reel as real as it can get.
Directed and written by Craig Mazin, the show with only five episodes, stars European actors Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson, and Paul Ritter in lead roles.
