BHOPAL : NSUI workers protesting DMAT scam and demanding conduct of the test under the supervision of a retired High Court judge, scuffled with policemen near Shivaji statue at Link Road on Tuesday.
After minor cane-charge and use of water cannons, the police arrested around 75 workers and sent them to Central jail. Agitating workers started pelting stones when police jawans began raining lathis onto them. Workers, who started their march to reach chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan’s residence from Pradesh Congress Committee office, were barricaded.
Huge police force was deployed on both sides of the barricade. Before this, NSUI workers burnt the effigy of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for her links with fugitive Lalit Modi. NSUI national president Roji John, state in-charge Nikhil Dwivedi, state president Vipin Wankhede, secretary Devendra Yadav participated in the protest. NSUI had called its state level office-bearers and district presidents for the protest. “Hundreds of workers reached from different places and were taking out peaceful rally to reach CM’s residence but police used force to scatter workers,” said spokesman Vivek Tripathi. Some workers entered the PCC building after stone pelting and lathi-charge.
