BHOPAL:The state capital witnessed unruly scenes on the polling day after BJP leaders and supporters laid siege to Gautam Nagar police station and blocked DIG Bungalow Square following an alleged attack on their party workers. Supporters of Congress candidate Arif Aqeel from Bhopal North entered into a scuffle with BJP workers at a polling center leaving two saffron party workers Pankaj Chowksey and Rajesh Kanojiya injured.
Enraged BJP workers later laid siege to Gautam Nagar police station seeking action against Congress supporters. They also started demanding an FIR against the congress workers including Amif Aqeel. The matter escalated after Mayor Bhopal Alok Sharma and BJP candidate from North Fatima Sidiqqui also reached the site. Police intervened and brought the situation under control. Corporator Manoj Rathore claimed that BJP workers were attacked when they tried to stop Congress supporters including women who in large numbers were trying to enter into a polling booth in Arif Nagar around 5 pm.
Angry Congress supporters thrashed BJP workers and pelted stones on them leaving them injured, he alleged. Najma Ansari, local Congress corporator, however, said that BJP workers were fabricating the incident and holding Congress workers responsible for it,whereas it was a two-sided affair and BJP workers were also involved in the aggravating the matter, she added. Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Zone 3 Shashank Garg said that the issue is now under probe and an FIR will be lodged.
