HOSHANGABAD : Scores of city residents including members of the Sikh community, voluntary organizations, students of various schools and others enthusiastically participated in a plantation campaign organised by the municipality in collaboration with the Security Paper Mill in the city on Friday. The participants planted 70,000 saplings, achieving the remarkable feat. Collector Rahul Jain, municipality chairperson Maya Narolia, superintendent of police IP Arjaria, conservator of forests G Krishnamurti, Zila Panchayat chief executive officer KG Tiwari, general manager of the Security Paper Mill Sahu participated in the programme.
The plantation of saplings started in a function organised on Adamgarh hill. Addressing the function on the occasion, municipality chairperson Narolia said the target has been achieved to plant the saplings at such a large scale to make the city green and clean in collaboration with the SPM which had provided the funds to the municipality to plant 1 lakh saplings. 30 thousand saplings were planted last year while 70 thousand have been planted today, she said. Seven thousand saplings were distributed among the people to plant them in their courtyards and 63,000 saplings have been planted at different public places.
The plantation could keep a check on soil erosion by the Narmada. She urged the people to look after saplings planted on Adamgarh hill and every couple should plant at least 20 saplings.
