Indore: With his achievements ranging from managing one of the biggest hospitals in Nepal to saving life of Nepal’s former king Gyanendra Shah, this 51-year-old cardiologist has earned pride for the city and his family.

Meet Dr Bharat Rawat, whose patients include popular faces like, former Indian Prime Minister IK Gujral, former Prime Minister of Nepal Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and Nepal’s former crown prince Paras Shah. Living as a celebrity figure in Nepal for 17 years, his life took a steep turn when his wife (hospital administrator Anjali Rawat) urged him to return home.

Sharing his story, Rawat said, “I had never imagined living so well and enjoying so much fame, but I just got lucky like a few doctors in world.” After completing his Medicine Doctor (MD) in 1994, Dr Rawat moved to New Delhi from Indore taking an available post in a hospital there.

“I worked there for four years, until my lucky chance came through Dr Naresh Trehan,” Rawat said. Trehan had an available heading position in the newly build hospital in Nepal. “I took the chance in blink of an eye, which began with a term of six months that turned into a year and then two years and eventually 17 years,” Rawat said. His term at the hospital not only brought him fame and lucky chances, but they inspired him to write.

“I learned Nepali there and wrote a book ‘Swasthya Mutu: Jiwan Shaili’, where ‘mutu’ means heart,” Rawat said. His wife and kids (Kavya and Gaurav) enjoyed fame and popularity during their stay as well. Talking about the twist, Rawat said, “My father (KS Rawat) was turning 80 in 2015, when Anjali suggested that we should gift him some special like ourselves.” He was not convinced with the idea of leaving his settled life and returning to begin life again in Indore.

“However, she convinced me and we decided never to blame each other for the decision, today I am grateful to her for making me take that decision,” Rawat said. While Nepalis left with tears, his parents welcomed him with flowers and band.

“It took me six months to realise that returning home was not a gift for my dad, but it was a gift for me,” Rawat said. He spends time every day with his father talking about routine and other thoughts. “My father has so much knowledge that I would have missed out on if I had not come back, I truly can learn so much now,” Rawat said. His mother’s love on the other hand heals him from every pain and helps him become a happy individual.
