Bhopal: Two students of AIIMS have been reportedly suspended for highlighting alleged corruption and anomalies at the institute. The final year medical students Sunny Aachwani and Sant Guru claimed that the administration has suspended them as they raised voice against the prevalent ‘corruption and irregularities’ at the institute.

The two students had floated “Ghotala@AIIMS Bhopal” a common platform to share alleged scams and irregularities in premier medical institute. Aachwani had taken up the issue of appointment of the then medical superintendent Dr Rajesh Malik, who now is a dean at the institute.

According to Aachwani, Malik had joined AIIMS, Bhopal on deputation for two years while working at Hamidia hospital. He never got approval to become a permanent faculty at AIIMS by central health ministry which is necessary for his stay beyond the end of his deputation tenure in 2015, said Aachwani. But somehow he managed to continue his stay at AIIMS Bhopal and is now receiving salary from here, which also accounts for financial irregularity, alleged Aachwani.

Dr Malik is also working as Head of radiology department informed the suspended student. Alleging anomalies in the purchase of machineries in the department, Aachwani said MRI machine was purchased at Rs 9.26 crores while it is available online at Rs 2-3 crores.

He further accused Malik of favouring his son who is a student in final year at AIIMS. After becoming dean, he made sure that his son tops in a few subjects specially in theory, alleged Aachwani, adding that the student did not even attend most of his classes and clinics and obtains his attendance through proxies.

Similarly, Sant Guru raised the issue of freedom of speech as he said that in the absence of permanent director, the administration is working arbitrarily and suppressing the voices of students.  Sant Guru former president of students union claimed that he has been raising various issues in AIIMS for the welfare of students.

Medical students boycott classes

Sporting black badges, AIIMS students boycotted their classes on Wednesday, however, they did not abstain themselves from examination of patients. The medical students said that there is urgent need of permanent director as they have no one to listen to their grievances.

The protesting students staged their demonstration under eh blazing sun, as they claimed that the AIIMS administration did not even permit them to erect a tent. Students said that medical services were not affected as they only boycotted their classes. Senior Administrative Officer (AO) Gaurav Dwivedi refused to comment on the strike stating that he was not a competent authority to make any remark.
