Bhopal: A function was held to mark the Police Commemoration Day at Lal Parade Ground on Friday. The governor, the home minister and the DGP met the family members of the martyred policemen and conveyed to them they shared their pain.
While speaking on the occasion, the governor OP Kohli said that police plays an important role in society and without it there can no peace, order and development. He also added that because of disciplined citizens, our reputation as a nation has touched new heights. He also added that it is the need of hour to make more efforts for modernisation of the police force and making latest gadgets available to them. Efforts should be made to provide higher education to the children of the personnel of the force.
Home minister Bhupendra Singh Thakur said that stress and long working hours have made policing a tough calling. The increasing crimes against women and depravations in society have emerged as new challenges for the police. DGP Rishi Shukla claimed that the law and order situation in the state is excellent and that the police force is committed to performing its duties with dedication.
The dignitaries laid wreaths at the police memorial and kept two minuets silence to pray for peace to the departed souls. A ceremonial march past followed.
The family members of the martyrs shared their agony with the governor and the DGP. The mother of martyr Mahesh Yadav requested the DGP to provide some financial assistance for her livelihood. Mahesh Yadav had died while arresting a notorious criminal in Mandla district.
The wife of Mahesh has been given appointment in the police force on compassionate grounds. The wife of Rikhiram Yadav, who had died while performing VIP duty in Hosangabad district, told the governor that her husband wanted that their son should become a bank officer and that she also wants to be a bank officer. To date, 473 police personnel in the state have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. In the past one year, five policemen laid down their lives. They included constable Atibal Singh, head constable Mahesh Yadav, constable Basant Verma, sub-inspector Vidhyaram Dohre and head constable Rakhiram Yadav.
