BHOPAL: The Supreme Court, on Monday, stayed the order of the MP High Court, cancelling the admissions of 862 students studying in 14 dental colleges in the state. The Court has given Dental Council of India (DCI) one-and-a-half months to seek the opinion of the Government of India on the issue.

The president of State Dental Colleges Association Dr Gursharan Singh informed Free Press that the Association of Private Dental and Medical Colleges (APDMC) had filed the petition in the Supreme Court in January this year.

He added that the Court has ordered that the DCI should take GoI opinion in the matter.

Earlier, the DCI had cancelled admissions of 862 students of 2014 batch. Their admissions were approved by the Directorate of Medical Education, Admission and Fees Regulatory Committee (AFRC) and even the DCI.

These students were admitted to private colleges without appearing in any admission test on the basis of the 12th class examination results.

But the Government of India had not approved the move and through the DCI, a case was filed in the High Court Jabalpur, which cancelled the admissions.

The students and the APDMC had filed a petition in the High Court and also in the Supreme Court saying that that as the students have already completed two years of their course, the court should permit them to complete their course. Later the DCI wrote a letter to the GoI to approve the admissions.

The reply from GoI is yet to come. Approximately 6,800 students are facing the same situation all over the country. The GoI decision will is going to affect all the students.
