Morena: Sand mafia opened fire on police team and also pelted the cops with stones when the latter tried to stop them from illegal mining in Chambal Crocodile Sanctuary near here on Sunday. The police party had to seek refuge in ravines of the river. Following police retaliation, the sand mafia escaped from the scene. During the raid, the police seized two tractor-trolleys and a JCB machine. These machines were hidden in the ravines.
Police have registered a case against the sand mafia. Sources said that a police team, comprising cops from six police stations of the Morena districts, including Civil Lines, Sarai Chhaula, Bagchini, Devgarh, Jaura and others, raided the area to prevent illegal sand mining in Chambal Crocodile Sanctuary near here. The police raided sand ghats of Kantheri, Barwasin, Kaimara, Gayapura and other places.
During the raid, the cops found that illegally mined sand was being loaded in tractors and trollies through JCB machine. Talking to reporters, forest department SDO RS Prajapati accepted that stones were pelted at the police team. However, he denied any firing.
