BHOPAL: Sandeep Singh is a person with strange ideas by today’s established norms, especially in the field of management studies. While corporates and management schools were going gaga over western management scholars or Indian management scholars propagating western management practices, Sandeep has different thoughts.
He is one of the speakers at Lokmanthan, which begins here on Saturday.
He kept wondering why India missed out on Industrial Revolution. This thought sent Sandeep towards a journey into exploring “Indian Management System” as well as “Indian Business History”.
His exploration about Indian Management System turned him into an author. To follow his passion, he gave up his cushy job as head of marketing in a renowned TV channel.
He has published two books “Business of Freedom” and “Indian Ocean Strategy” researching Indian Way of Management and documenting it in these books. “Business of Freedom” challenged the notion that India and Indians didn’t have great management ethos.
To Sandeep’s surprise, he couldn’t find biographies and autobiographies of Indian businessman easily or even books on Indian Companies or Indian Business and Trade Organisations when he began his research. So, he began collecting such books.
His search took him to second hand book shops in Mumbai and then on to second hand book shops across India i.e. Delhi, Kanpur, Kolkatta, Jamshedpur, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Pune. To be fair, many corporate houses chipped in by donating books.
In his decade long labour of passion Sandeep has collected 500 books on his subect of research. His collection has a significant section on businessmen of Indian origin who have made it big outside India.
The collection has a rare book authored by the Indian industrialists on various issues for example the book by Vinay Bharat Ram who is the chairman of DCM Limited, titled “The Theory of the Global Firm”, much before Globalization became the buzz word.
