BHOPAL: Thousands of posts are vacant in the police department because of the long overdue promotions and direct recruitments. Many branches of the department are facing serious shortage of the force personnel.

IG, administration, Dr Ved Prakash Sharma informed Free Press that the department is not able to declare the list of departmental promotions as the case is pending in Supreme Court regarding the ‘reservation in promotion’.

Many posts are filled only by the promotions, especially those of head constables and reserve inpector (RI), while recruitment on the other posts like ASI, SI and Subedar are also made directly, along with the departmental promotions. Around 50 percent recruitment is done through departmental promotions and remaining through direct recruitments.

The police department conducts exams for recruitments through the Professional Examination Board.  In the department around 2,500 posts of constable, 40 RI and Subedar, 1,000 of ASIs and 1,500 posts of head constables are vacant.

The other wings of the police department are also staff crunch, with posts lying vacant in wings of radio, CID, EOW and SAF.

In SAF around 2,000 posts are vacant, while posts of 27 DSP are vacant in CID. Similarly 51 posts of SI, 77 of ASI, 102 of head constables and 15 posts of constables are vacant.

Presently the CID is investigating several cases but due to insufficient police force the department is facing heavy workload and is not able to conduct the investigation on time. Mainly the SI and ASI are the main investigative officers for the department and they are very short in number.
