Bhopal: Citing a list issued by Medical Council of India, State’s Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has informed Supreme Court that it cannot accommodate more than 36 students of derecognised RKDF Medical College. The Supreme Court, however, has asked the State’s Directorate of Medical Education (DME) to initiate process for accommodating medical students of the college.

There are a total of 150 students of RKDF college who are waiting to get admission in medical institutes after recognition of their college was withdrawn. Earlier, the court had directed the DME to accommodate the aggrieved students in other medical colleges. Failure of the DME to adhere to the court’s order had compelled the students to file a contempt petition in the apex court.

In its reply to the apex court, the directorate expressed its inability to accommodate all the 150 students of the Medical College in other medical institutes in the state. The DME had stated that the Medical Council of India (MCI) listed only 36 seats for the students so it cannot accommodate all the aggrieved students. The court in turn directed the DME to do whatever it can and that rest of the things would be handled at Central level.

Quoting MCI, the DME had informed the court said that since students other than 36 will have to be accommodated in other states, so it doesn’t have jurisdiction to conduction inter-state level counselling for them. Accommodation of RKDF students will affect their counterparts in other states so counselling for them should be conducted by Medical Council committee working under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) under the Central government, DME mentioned in the affidavit to the court.

SC advocate Harish Parasar said that MCI had released the seats which showed that DME can only fill 36 seats so the DME told the court that it could not accommodate students beyond 36. He further informed that the apex court has told the DME to do what it can and rest of the things will be taken care of at Central level. “So it is now clear that RKDF students will get relief soon.” It may be possible that they would get given admission in other states but batch 2017-2018 will remain unaffected.

One of parents of the aggrieved student said that almost one year has passed and the DME response is highly disgusting. DME looks after entire counselling affairs and even after SC ruling, it is simply shrugging off its responsibly and lingering the case and now the entire academic session is coming to an end.

RKDF’s 150 MBBS students of the college had approached apex court after the Medical Council of India (MCI) cancelled the medical college’s affiliation. The court had directed DME to accommodate the students. RKDF students had filed contempt petition in the apex court against DME for their failure to comply with court’s order. These students had taken the admission through NEET counselling in 2017 for 2017-2018 academic year.
