BHOPAL : The use of ‘Egg Tempera’, a European technique of circa 14th century, has apparently worked wonders in the paintings of artist Aasha Radhika which have been displayed in a four-day painting exhibition ‘Me and My Reflection’. The exhibition was inaugurated at Swaraj Vithika on Thursday.
It is noteworthy here that very few artists in India use this medieval technique in contemporary works and Radhika is one of them. ‘Egg Tempera’, also known as tempera paintings, is found in early Egyptian sarcophagi decorations and now it is mostly used in museum work. The specialty of paintings of this technique is that they last very long and give transparency in works.
As many as 30 realistic and expressive works of Radhika have been showcased in this art gallery which have human emotions as an integral aspect. The colour combination, its usage and technique are attraction of this exhibition. Women are the central subject of her works.
In one of her most appreciated works, Radhika painted a woman with wings which represents the women’s inherent longing for freedom.
In another work, a girl in blue dress has been shown reading a book. It is fully based on ‘Egg Tempera’ painting technique. In most of her works, the artist highlights her relation with her daughter as well as nature including flowers, birds and animals. In others she can be seen playing with her daughter, talking with birds, loving animals and her affection with book.
Talking to Free Press Journal, Radhika, a branch manager in SBI Bank in Hyderabad, said, “Basically I hail from Hyderabad but I’ve graduated from Anand Vihar College in Bhopal. I have been painting in various mediums for more than 30 years and initiated exhibiting my works 14 years ago. The medium of ‘Egg Tempera’ fascinated me the most. My present works are collection of past 20 years and experiences recreated in the form of paintings and drawing.”
“For the first time I have exhibited my works in Bhopal. All this could be possible due to immense support provided by my friends and colleagues. My family is my emotional strength which helps me face the world,” Radhika added.
