Tiredness taking a toll

I am a 26-year-old man. I work very hard from 9-5 job. Since many months, I come home very tired and the tiredness doesn’t go away. I sleep as much as I used to before. But even after the weekend, I still feel tired on Monday. I don’t know what to do anymore, and I never have energy to go out with friends or do anything after work. I am slowly and gradually slipping into a negative frame of mind which is taking a toll on me both physically and mentally which in turn is affecting my work as well. What can I do to be in a state of comfort and get some answers for this perpetual state of feeling weak and lethargic all of a sudden?

Ans. The fact that your tiredness is perpetual could hint at there being deficiency of some kind which might require a few pharmacological tests to confirm the same. Evaluating your work-life balance, eating habits, exercise routine are all essential as well. Along with self evaluation, checking with your family and friends who closely observe you could also give an insight into any imbalance in your work life scenario. This dual evaluation could definitely help figure out the root cause of your mentioned issues.

The pesky co-worker

I share a cubicle at work with another employee. She is a very nice woman at heart, but she does not seem to understand the concept of personal space. I am constantly distracted when she uses the speakerphone to discuss everything. She reads my computer screen over my shoulder, and is always looking at what I am doing. I cannot concentrate and focus on my work, but I also don’t know how to tell her to keep to herself because she has always been nice to me.

Ans. The co-worker seems to create a strong sense of annoyance in you towards her behaviour. Though she has always been nice to you, being honest about how certain things irk you and create an overall sense of discomfort to be around her is essential. I understand that telling her honestly might resemble being rude or ‘telling her off’, but it doesn’t have to reflect in the kind of vocabulary you use. Always begin with how you genuinely feel about her (niceness) and then go on to mention those things that don’t suit well with you, thus creating a neutral impact and not hurting any sentiments.

‘Attack’ on attire

I am a 28-year-old woman working at a big company. I like to dress a certain way at work, and I wear skirts, tops, and heels. I feel comfortable and confident in this attire. However, yesterday I was called by my boss who said that I was not allowed to dress like that in the office. He told me I was expected to wear saree, or kurti or salwaar only. I don’t understand why what I wear should be decided by my boss; I find it unfair, but can do nothing about it.

Ans. Every organisation might have certain dress code to follow in order to maintain uniformity. Since you have been wearing certain type of clothes and have been recently asked to change the same, seeking an intervention from the Human Resource (HR) department and understanding more about this change is essential. The feeling of being treated in an unfair manner is quite normal and expected, however, this feeling cannot give you the answers you seek rather leaves you in a space wherein there could be resultant discord between you and your boss.

Getting ‘techy’

I own a small café in Mumbai. My competition has increased considerably in the last five years. I want to come up with innovative things that will trend on social media, but I am not young enough to do it well. What should I do to build my credibility as well as work towards a successful business with confidence about my work again?

Ans. Changing times requires a change in perception as well as acceptability. It is a good thing that you are realising what might be required for your business to improve. The next step is to plan and strategise ways and means that can help in this improvement. You could begin by hiring few staff members who are tech savvy and know their way around the current trends and understand the present market. Delegating work to people who are well versed as well as who relate more to the current times could help in bringing about a revamp to the cafe business. Consulting a business developer could also be a possibility as you can discuss your innovative plans with the professional and design a workable plan that would guarantee a minimum amount of risk and maximum amount of profit for the café business.
