Seoul : South Korean Presidential candidates made last minute appeals to rally support on Monday as the nation of 51 million elects a new President on Tuesday after a year of political upheaval. Latest polls have put Democratic Party’s Moon Jae-in in the lead, the media reported.
The early election was triggered after President Park Geun-hye was ousted from office in March following her involvement in a massive corruption scandal.
Moon’s closest rivals are conservative Liberty Korea Party candidate Hong Joon-pyo and the People’s Party candidate Ahn Cheol-soo, who is also a liberal. Both are close to 20 per cent in the polls. Moon made a final pitch to voters Monday. “Without the united power of our people, (new administration) will struggle from its first step. We must overcome this with united power,” he said. –IANS
