Pune: The case of a Pune woman who was said to have been killed in an accident seven months ago, was not an accident but murder, police investigations have revealed. The brother of the deceased did this to claim her insurance of Rs 30 lakh, said police.

On Saturday, Hinjewadi Police arrested John Daniel Borde. On September 9, 2018, John was seen driving his sister Sangita Hiwale, 44, to the hospital. Her son Simon and their mother Maya too were in the car.

Halfway through their journey, John claimed there was a problem with the car. Sangita was in the car while the other three got out and suddenly the car was ablaze. “I tried saving my sister, but before I could reach her, the car exploded and Sangita was charred to death in the car,” was his initial statement.

However, police investigations showed that John had fought with Sangita over money and in a fit of rage, he had banged his sister’s head on the floor in their house. At that time, there was nobody else, except the two of them. Thereafter, under the pretext of taking her to the hospital, John drove her in his car. He also also took along Simon and Maya.

At the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass, John claimed there was some problem with the car. He stepped out and asked Simon and Maya to do the same. However, as Sangita was unconscious, she remained inside. When John noticed both Simon and Maya were not paying attention, he poured 10 litres of kerosene on Sangita and the car and set it ablaze. Simon’s attempt to save his mother proved unsuccessful. John made a pretence of trying to rescue his sister.

Police grew suspicious about the CNG car catching fire. They investigated and the forensic laboratory detected traces of kerosene in the evidence submitted. During intense police interrogation, John confessed to his crime. He told the police he wanted to pocket the Rs 30 lakh in insurance money and this was the reason he killed his sister. – FPJ Bureau
