The northern extension of Phase 1 of the Pune Metro, which includes the proposed elevated route from PCMC to Bhaktishakti, covering a total distance of 4.519 km, is advancing rapidly.
This extension is a key part of the larger Phase-1 project of the Pune Metro, managed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro), which was completed this year.
The passenger service on Phase-1 has already garnered an overwhelming response, prompting MahaMetro to focus on expanding both the northern (PCMC) and southern (Swargate) ends for enhanced passenger convenience. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and the Traffic Police have been supportive, facilitating smooth progress by granting necessary permissions.
The route experiences heavy traffic due to the presence of industrial zones, defense establishments, government offices, and numerous colleges. The introduction of the metro is expected to alleviate the traffic congestion and reduce the pollution caused by excessive vehicle use. With careful traffic management in place, the metro development is progressing without disrupting daily commutes, earning positive feedback from both local residents and civic authorities.
As of now, progress on the northern extension is on track, with 28 out of 151 foundations completed, 13 of 151 piers erected, and 201 of the 1,337 segments required for the elevated route cast. These milestones highlight the steady pace of construction and the project's promising trajectory toward meeting its 2024 deadline.
