A 15-year-old boy has been detained for the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl over being beaten up by her father in October. The Mahatma Phule Chowk police traced the minor suspect within an hour after the crime on Dec 1.

Senior Police Inspector Ashok Honmane said, “As per initial information, the victim’s parents and three siblings beg at Kalyan station. Each had a different spot fixed for begging. The minor suspect worked as a garbage collector.”

Mr Honmane said it surfaced during the interrogation that the girl’s father got into an argument with the boy one and a half months ago and beat him up. On Thursday morning, at around 4am, when the family was fast asleep, he picked up the girl and took her to a deserted building and raped her. When she screamed, he killed her by slitting her throat with a cutter blade and fled, Mr Honmane said. Some people discovered the body around 7pm and informed the police.

Mr Honmane said they checked CCTV footage in the area, questioned a few locals and detained two garbage collectors, one of them being the 15-year-old suspect. “The investigation is still underway,” he said.
