Mumbai: Over 2.2 lakh students are applying for the First Year Junior College (FYJC) admission which is set to begin by mid June. Students who have completed Class 10 through the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board can apply online for this admissions process. For the first time, ‘withdrawal of application’ is a new feature introduced in the process to improvise the mechanism of allotment of seats.

Students who do not want to secure admissions through the FYJC online process can withdraw their application using this feature. Also, students who have secured admissions in other courses like polytechnic or Industrial Training Institute (ITI) can withdraw their application form. This will prevent blocking of seats and make room for other students who are still wanting to secure seats for FYJC.

A senior officer managing the admission process, said, “If students have already secured admissions for ITI or polytechnic course then they can withdraw their application from the centralised online process. Students often try to block seats and this does not let help other students who are waiting for admission as per merit rounds. This feature of withdrawal of application will avoid this practice of blocking of seats.”

On the other hand, students claim they want to secure admissions in the college of their choice as they have the option to name 10 colleges in the preference list. Aayushi Mehta, a student, said, “Often, we are not allotted seats in the college of our preference in the first merit round so we block our seats and wait for the next round.

Also, those who want to secure admissions in other courses should not enter the centralised system in the first place to avoid any confusion.” This year, one bifocal or zero round, three general rounds, one special round followed by First-Cum-First-Served (FCFS) rounds will be conducted.

Information booklets regarding guidelines of online admission process are being provided to schools. Students can use these booklets to understand various steps of the process. Firoz Osmany, a student, said, “There is a lot of quota reservation based on caste, social and economic status which complicates the admission process.”
